This small batch Gin from South Australia is filled with summer vibes.
36 Short Gin is crafted by two brothers, Jon and Con Lioulio,whose excellent Rakia I reviewed last year, and who debuted this Gin several months back. But I wanted to wait until the warmer Australian months to introduce it to you and if you’re reading this in the Northern Hemisphere, this might be the antidote for some Fall/ Winter blues.
The Gin is gentle and rounded on the palette as a result of distilling grape spirit in a cooper pot still and vapour infusing the botanicals.
The use of grape spirit lends this softness and full mouth feel generally to a gin compared to a grain spirit by the way.
They use blood orange peel, cardamom, cinnamon, lemon, orange, juniper berry and coriander. All of these are nicely balanced, with naturally the citrus dominant but with the spices bringing up the rear and making for a clean dry finish, with some natural sweetness.
If you’re familiar with the Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin, you’ll find this expression lighter and less intense overall, and dare I say it, has more finesse.
At 45% ABV its a serious drink, but you don’t notice the alcohol either on the nose, or on the palette, so closely woven is the distillation.
Tasting Notes
On the nose it’s a fragrant sweet orange, very lightly spiced.
This style of Gin is destined for easy drinking on ice with slices of blood orange and / or fresh mint, or rosemary, for a garnish. Or add some quality tonic to lengthen the sipping.
I found it makes for a good basis in a Negroni, especially with some of the excellent Maidenii Sweet Vermouth, and go easy on the Campari.
The Take Home
I don’t want to over think this Gin. It’s simply delicious and approachable, made with care, and presents with a perfectly balanced flavour profile.
